The Aven d’Orgnac cave is one of the biggest limestone caves in France. The southern Ardèche is limestone country. Over the course of countless ages rainwater and rivers have created rocky outcrops and many caves. You can visit at least ten different caves in the Ardèche. The Aven d’Orgnac is perhaps the biggest one and certainly one of the most beautiful. If the Ardèche surprises you with a day of lesser-quality weather, you can easily spend half a day or more at this site. The cave is big and you will visit a number of its halls. There are elaborate towers of rocky pancakes and exquisite curtains of rock. As you amble downwards with your guide, you will learn a lot about the origins of this cave. Above ground the site also holds a modern museum about life in pre-historic times. Definitely worth a visit, too!
